“I learned to work with others and use my imagination. I learned to use my mind instead of TV shows and write a play.”

One of the fundamental aims of leading the young writers through the workshop process is to increase their comfort level in sharing ideas and feelings. The collection of plays which follow all deal with the expression of conflict resolution through metaphor. The use of metaphor is a powerful means of allowing the students to open up and to incorporate their own opinions and reflections into their works.

Since completing his first play with EORO, Miguel  Gonzalez designed an award-winning poster for the Center for Domestic Violence
Prevention, was released from Hillcrest Juvenile Hall, and passed the final part of the series to earn his GED.  Miguel is coaching youth basketball at the Boys & Girls Club and preparing to attend Cañada College in the Fall. His goal is to attend San Jose State University.  In Miguel's own words, "I want to become a counselor or work in a juvenile facility, with kids in trouble with the law, because I have been through a lot, too.  I want to help other kids, just like people helped me; I believe they can learn from their mistakes, as I did.  I come from the streets, I know what's going on with these kids and how they’re feeling.  I'm already street smart, all I need to do is go to college, hit the books, and be 'book smart'. "  We certainly wish him all the best in his future endeavors.

__________
Hi, my name is Anthony Schlander.
I first participated in the Each One Reach One program in December of 1999 and again in October of 2000. When I first met the staff they were incredibly positive and totally supportive. When I found out what the program was about I thought to myself that I wouldn’t be able to do this. What did I look like a teenage William Shakespeare but I did it and liked what I did! The program taught me a lot. It showed me how to put down how I was feeling on the paper in front of me and jut flat out use my imagination. I now know that writing is one of the most powerful and productive things I can do for myself. It took my confidence to another level and I realized that what I was doing wasn’t writing a one-act play, what I was doing was believing that I can do anything I want if I put my mind to it. This program is definitely second to none.
